Sohryu Asuka Langley Gets New Name for Eva 2.0?

Asuka Langley… Shikinami?SankakuComplex (link safe for work, rest of site not so much) pointed out this morning that Asuka’s long awaited return to the Evangelion franchise might not be quite the same as fans were expecting. In a listing of cast credits, the spot that would normally read ‘Sohryu Asuka Langley’ instead reads ‘Shikinami Askua Langley’. What does this mean for fans? Well in the short run, absolutely nothing since the film doesn’t even premiere in theaters for another three months (late June in case you forgot).

In the long run what this means for fans is that they may be getting an entirely new Evangelion experience (for those of us who wanted to gouge our eyes out while going through our first miserable Eva experience). The second film of the four part Eva retelling is already set to introduce a brand new character named Mari and so seeing Askua with a new name could indicate a complete revamping of her character with a new personality to boot. Speaking for myself, Asuka remained one of the bright spots of the original series. She was a tsundere before anyone had even thought to describe her as one and that always wins points in my book.

So what do you think? Is changing her family name indicative of a complete character overhaul or is this just a tiny detail that no one will even remember to complain about after the film is actually released?

The second. Naming isn’t necessary a convention of overhaul, but that remains to be seen - you can’t expect a remake without certain liberties taken on the story to make it ‘better’, so I for one have no complaints…yet :P
