Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo (Sora Kake Girl)
Premiere Date:
1/5/09
Studio: Sunrise
Genre: Sci-Fi

Story:

Roughly translating into ‘Girl Who Leapt Through Space’ (And yes, that is a play off of ‘Girl Who Leapt Through Time’), this series takes place in space in a future when humanity has created space colonies. Excited so far? The heroine is a girl named Akiha who discovers an evil AI system named Leopard. Teaming up with a police officer (Itsuki), a girl named Honoka and a robot nicknamed Imo-chan, the quartet decides to take on Leopard.

Wow, Sunrise doing a mech series set in space? Wonder where that idea came from.

Artwork:

Let’s keep in mind here that anything I saw in this section are based on the character artwork that I saw on the official website and a fifteen second promotion video that was released not too long ago. Having said that… cringe. It’s hard to say that anything I’ve seen so far has me excited to see what ‘Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo’ is capable of displaying. Sunrise has a good reputation when it comes to mech series and, in this case, has brought in Hiroyuki Ookawa (Xenosaga: the Animation, My-Otome) to handle mech designs.

Early Reactions:

Another mech series set in space with three girls and a robot as the primary leads. What I have seen of the animation and heard about the story has left me with very little interest in seeing this series. As with every new series though, there are things that could lure me towards their side if certain things fall into place.

First off, Aya Endo (Miyuki in Lucky Star, Misaki in Zegapain) and Yui Makino (Misaki in ‘Welcome to the NHK’, May-Yu in ‘Zegapain’, and Sakura in ‘Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle’) have already been announced to take on the roles of Itsuki and Honoka respectively. While neither of these seiyuu have had huge roles in the past, their smaller roles have certainly been enough to catch my eye over the last couple of years. The second thing is an opening theme by Ali Project. That alone is enough to tap into the music fan in me and make me want to watch the opening of the episode just to hear the theme.

Right now though, this series is currently falling into the ‘just another mech series’ category. I will give it the standard three episode test run but the odds of me catching the series past that are slim at this point.
