Story:

Based on the light novels of the same name, this series opens in a distant future and is set inside a school. Excited yet? Wait there’s more. Pollution has contaminated creatures around the world forcing what is left of humanity to live in mobile cities referred to as Regios. The main character is a freshman named Reifon at one of these cities (which is also a school). While there he joins the Martial Arts Study Unit.

However, since its initial release the series has had a manga series released that tells a slightly different story than the light novel. It’s hard to tell which story the anime series will follow more closely.

Looking at the promotional vid, there are a lot of things that spring to mind and none of them are particularly good. It’s obvious that all of the primary character types are going to be represented for fans but none of the character designs strike me as anything particularly fantastic. Admittedly it would have been nice to see a few more full body shots in that trailer.

The battle scenes are where the video started to get my attention the most. While mostly they just showed the big explosions and what looked to be some interesting powers, at the very least the action looks like it will be fun to watch.  

Early Reactions:

Where this series is going to succeed or fail is in the story, with the setting being in a school and much of the comedy shown in the video being dramatic sighs and temper tantrums, my instincts are telling me that much of this series jokes are going to revolve around teenage angst. The good news though is that ‘Chrome Shelled Regios’ has quite a following behind it which gives me hope. Either way, this is a series that you’re going to have an opinion on fairly early. I’m going to check it out to see if it grabs me early because it’s a safe bet that if it doesn’t get me early there won’t be anything later on to change my mind.
