Always Remember: Use the *(^*&^ Spoiler Tags!

Published by otakureview at 11:29 am under Anime Edit This

Spoiler tags are one of the greatest inventions of the modern internet age. When the world started to co-exist online, something new and wonderful came out of that in the form of spoiler tags. Finally there was a day where those of us who liked to be spoiled and those of us who would scream bloody rage and cast demonic  hexes on others who dared to spoil an ending (I fall into the second category if you’re wondering).

Unfortunately, not every one out there has gotten the memo about these wonderful tags and so I am going to lay it out: Dude, stop with the spoilers!

You may love it when someone out there spoils something for you. Maybe you want to avoid a scary part, or the sad part, or you want to know who dies or whatever else. That’s great for you. More power to you if you want to know how something ends before you get there (I personally think this is almost entirely self defeating but that’s my own personal argument). What you may be shocked (SHOCKED I say!) to hear is that not everyone enjoys that happening to them.

Normally this isn’t a problem with the anime community. Most otaku I know are very cautious about giving out any sort of spoiler, I know that when I am describing an anime series to a friend I am very careful about what words I use to describe certain scenes and will even go so far as to ask friends on just how much they actually want to know before I start ranting. The point is that it’s a common courtesy amongst fans that most know.

Two examples popped up in my everyday life recently though that made me believe this needed to be reitated. First was someone on an official message board just outright blurting the ending to the series ‘Cowboy Bebop’ in the very first message of a new thread. No tags, no warning, just out with it. One could argue that he didn’t need to tag that since the series is already so old that most people have seen it but to watch the replies come flooding in from all the people who HADN’T seen it yet, I wasn’t going to be the one to try and use that argument.

Another example popped up last night during a discussion over the series ‘Sola’ (which I am STILL waiting for the US release of *hints towards Bandai*) when a person revealed the origin of a character’s powers.

So without further adieu, here is a quick reminder of spoiler guidelines…

For those of you who want to give spoilers:

1.       USE THE GODDAMN TAGS!

Oh, you’re back to posting again! ^^ Pah, I fullposted cos I thought there’d be more to the ’spoiler guidelines’, pfft. :P

I couldn’t care less about spoilers, really, since I have a bad memory. XD In one ear, out the other. But yeah, some people can be pretty militant about it.

Lol I just realised how that sounds. Yay to sleepy just-woke-up commenting. I mean that in a good way! (I think.) Ohoho.

Stressing about spoilers just gives undue…well…stress. Everyone should develop a goldfish’s memory so they won’t have to worry. :D (Just kidding..maybe..)
